Winter Munchies Got You Blue? We’ve Got the Solution!

As we settle in to winter, naturally we have to fight off the urge to stop ourselves from consuming too many calories or otherwise face the problem of burning off those extra jules.

Naturally, when we have a meal, our bodies convert all the extra calories that we don’t need, into triglycerides. Triglycerides are a type of fat that is found in your blood and can be transferred back into energy between meals. While this is not usually something you need to worry about maintaining, sometimes we can get carried away and triglyceride levels can rise in the blood and cause artery blockages.

A simple remedy for this is omega-3- which reduces the plasma triglyceride levels. This is the reason why it’s so important to make sure you get your fix of omega-3 fatty acids on a regular basis as our bodies do not naturally produce it. Omega-3 fatty acids are typically found in foods such as fish, however, not everyone has a taste for fishy foods and so, we have the answer for an affective alternative.

As part of our new Iconic series, we have introduced omega-3 capsules which not only help promote healthy fats in our bodies, but also act as anti-inflammatories which assist in the relief of symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Think about it as your go-to if you experience joint aches and pains, high blood pressure or high levels of triglycerides. Not only that, but it also helps promote healthy endocrine function and insulin sensitivity. Omega-3 is easily the most overlooked and underrated supplement amongst body builders and athletes because the benefits are just so incredible.

So if you’re looking to not only get on-top of your show game this winter, but also want to make sure you’re crushing it health wise, consider an omega-3 supplement, because simply put, if you’re going to do something, you always want to do it right!

Our omega-3 capsules are now available on our website- and 90 softgel capsules will only cost you R139.99. Definitely stay up-to-date with our website to remain engaged with all our new products that are launching as a part of our Iconic series. No matter whether your niche is body-building, serious sport or if you’re simply someone just stepping onto the scene for the first time, our products are specifically designed to help you elevate your experience, every time.

Weight loss is never an easy journey. Often, the idea of starting a diet or weight loss regime is worse than anything else. Changing the way you look at weight loss can make all the difference. The idea of depriving yourself of all the good things in life is usually where all the problems come in. A simple shift in your mind set is all you need to put you on the right path to reaching your weight loss goals.

Balancing exercise and diet

To lose weight you need to include exercise in your daily routine, this shouldn’t come as a surprise at all. Exercise helps you to burn off calories. Of course, only focussing on exercise isn’t enough. If you are consuming more calories in a day than you are burning off, you won’t see any results. Luckily, cutting down on your calorie intake doesn’t mean living on fresh air and water. Your body still needs necessities like protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, as well as vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables in order to keep functioning properly, so you need to make sure you are getting in enough of the necessities to stay healthy. Crash dieting should never be an option. Your overall health should always be your main priority, especially now, during a time when staying healthy has become a necessity.

Start off by cutting your portion sizes down. This is a lot easier to do than totally changing your diet. If you find you are still hungry after a meal, increase the amount of vegetables you consume. Steer clear of processed foods. The number of additives in processed foods are not only bad for your health, they also lead to weight gain. Of course, fast foods are no different, so try and avoid it. Lastly, when doing your grocery shopping, always look out for the ‘light’ versions of products. Most condiments like mayonnaise and tomato sauce are available in light versions – reduced oils, fats and sugars. Sugar is by far the biggest problem at the moment, most foods are packed full of sugar. Make a point of checking the sugar content on packaging and try and avoid foods that have a high sugar content.

Making small changes to your diet will make it easier to stick to your weight loss goals over time. Weight loss takes time, but with the right amount of exercise coupled with a good eating plan, you will see the results!

Boredom and snacking go together like a good wine and cheese. There is something about being in lock down that triggers the need to constantly be eating to help pass the time. With limited options available for keeping yourself entertained, this seems like a logical approach. Of course, this is likely going to lead to a great deal of regret later on.

Gyms are temporarily closed until further notice, exercise sessions are limited to specific hours of the morning, and there is limited access to almost everything. While this seems like a good enough reason to give up on your health and fitness goals and let your hard work go out the window – it doesn’t have to be! Maintaining a healthy lifestyle in lock down just requires a bit of creative thinking on your part.

With the internet offering access to unlimited exercise videos suitable for home exercising, that helps sort out the challenge of staying physically active. The most problematic challenge that needs addressing here is knowing what to snack on to keep your sweet tooth at bay. (Please note how giving up snacking was never mentioned as an option here.) Living a healthy lifestyle in no way means that you must give up any of the good stuff in life! If you were born with a sweet tooth, you know it is almost impossible to ignore it when the craving for something sweet and delicious calls – or, when the boredom is creeping up on you and you decide it is time to treat yourself for the umpteenth time today …

An any season, any weather favourite that is bound to strike the right note whenever the need arises, is pancakes. Easy to make and perfect for a healthy lifestyle (with the right ingredients of course), pancakes will offer you just what you need.

Try out this deliciously easy pancake recipe to set you on the right side of snacking.

Healthy, delicious pancakes for whenever the craving calls

1/2 cup of almond unsweetened milk or fat free milk

2 eggs

1 egg white

1 banana

2 tablespoons of honey

1,5 cups of oats

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 scoop Nutri-Con South Africa whey protein (any flavour)

1 scoop of whey protein

Almond/cashew nuts

Mix the milk, eggs, banana, honey, oats, baking powder, salt and whey together.

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Once warm, spray the skillet with non-stick spray.

Pour the pancake batter into the skillet in a circular shape, cook for 2–3 minutes on each side.

For the topping you can mix 1 scoop of whey powder with a little water or fat free milk to make it thick, drizzle it over the pancakes and choose some nuts or fruit to top it off with.

Creatine vs Beta-Alanine in the Race for Endurance

Whenever someone invests time and energy into a fitness goal, there are quite a few misconceptions that could possibly hinder you in some way. As you embark on this journey, you really want to have a clear understanding of how your body works and exactly what you want to achieve. Once you know where you stand in terms of your goals you can start researching which supplements will benefit you the most.

One thing that will always remain essential to everyone, no matter your sport or your goal, is creatine. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound which is found in 95% of muscle tissue and 5% in organ tissue, such as your kidneys and liver. It is active in supplying your muscles with energy during high intensity exercise or weight lifting.

Therefore, considering creatine as a part of your daily routine is beneficial. In small amounts, it can help you enhance your strength and improve exercise performance.

As part of our new Iconic series, we have launched our Creatine Monohydrate, which helps promote muscle recovery and lean muscle volume as well as muscle power and strength. The great thing about creatine is that it is most affective in small doses and you can trust that just a little bit will get you a long way. This makes this product ideal for anyone who is looking to become more active in their daily life, not just those of us who are in to hardcore exercise.

Hand in hand with the creatine monohydrate, we can talk about the Beta-Alanine capsules. Typically, Beta-Alanine causes paraesthesia, which is a tingling sensation felt in the body, though this is usually due to high volumes of in take.

To better understand why this happens, Beta-Alanine is a non-essential amino acid which reduces the accumulation of lactic acid in your muscles. Which is why it is able to enhance overall performance. The idea of creating a capsule was not only to monitor the intake but allow users the choice of whether they would like to use Beta-Alanine as a part of their routine, instead of forcing it into the Creatine Monohydrate as most brands typically do.

So when you’re looking at sports which really challenge your endurance and muscle recovery, you really want to look at which supplements could benefit you the most. Not everything needs to be taken at once and it’s important to understand the label and what exactly you’re putting in to your body, which is why NutrIcon is so devoted to ensuring utmost transparency.

We all know that change is inevitable, the world is constantly changing around us. While the idea of change is generally accepted as the norm, our current circumstances seem very far from the norm. With the current Covid-19 pandemic, our lives seem to have changed overnight with very little warning. Life has taken a completely different turn, and most people find themselves trying to figure out where to go from here and what to do with themselves.

If ever there was a time to make health and well-being your top priority, that time is definitely now. While implementing strict lock down measures has been done for the greater good of the population, the negative effects on individuals are very real too. Other than the obvious boredom factor, self-quarantine makes staying healthy and physically active a bit of a challenge, especially with all the restrictions that are now in place.

Accepting defeat should not even cross your mind! If you had goals that you were working very hard to achieve before everything happened, nothing has to change except for how you are going to keep working towards these goals. Most of us have more time on our hands now than we ever had before, so why not make the most of it? Beat the boredom by making your health and fitness goals your main focus. This might be easier to do than you realise.

Focus on your physical and mental well-being

Being granted an exercise session in the mornings during Level 4 of lock down has definitely helped, but there are many more hours in the day that you can use to stay active too. Everything doesn’t have to depend on a three-hour exercise window, there is still a lot you can do during the day in the comfort of your own home. The internet is full of exercise videos and exercise routines that you can follow that don’t require equipment or large spaces. You might just be surprised by what you can do!

Other than exercise being a requirement for a healthy body, staying active assists with mental well-being too. The stress and uncertainty of this pandemic and what it has brought with it can take a toll on mental well-being, so having a goal to keep you motivated while staying physically active (to keep you feeling good) can do a lot for your overall well-being. Your goals might just help you through this uncertain time, so make the best out of this bad situation by beating the boredom the healthy way!
